A History of Japanese Condoms

Condoms made by rubber came on the scene in Europe. In Japan, a product that was described as "Apparatus to avoid pregnancy" appeared in "Yotsumeya", an early prototype of store catalogue in Japan. It is believed to be a spin-off of silk-made glans sack.

Yotsumeya: Ancient Tokyo’s Sex Shop
You may know that there are ancient Japanese dildos, historical erotic prints, fart war scrolls, and even bamboo sex dolls from long ago.
But did you know
there was also a sex shop in old Tokyo? Yotsumeya was in the Ryogoku area of Edo (the old name for Tokyo), a bustling center and not too far from the famous red light district, Yoshiwara. It first opened in 1626, making it the oldest adult goods shop in Japan, though sadly it closed in the Meiji period (late nineteenth century) when Japan was trying to “modernize” (and did such foolish things as make prostitution illegal).
Many of the things
sold at Yotsumeya were pretty expensive, including the Azumagata Ningyou sex doll, meaning that the ordinary citizens of the city made do with home-made remedies. One such was to grow a cucumber (kyuri) until it was much bigger than normal, carve out a hole and then get plugging with your cock!

Sadly,
no real visual record of Yotsumeya and its amazing wares exists, though its name survives in Rakugo performances even today.

nakoodo isha 仲人医者 doctors as matchmakers for marriage
keian 慶庵 / 桂庵 Keian matchmaker
Named after the famous matchmacer-doctor Yamato Keian 大和慶庵 (around 1653).

A Nakodo go-between was necessary for a regular marriage in Edo.
Some doctors with a bad medical reputation could fall back on this kind of "business". Once the marriage was fixed, he would get quite a bit of "thank-you money".

- quote -
A nakōdo (仲人 matchmaker) serves the role of a go-between for families in the miai process. A nakōdo is not necessary for all miai. The nakōdo can be a family member, friend, or matchmaking company.
Professional organizations have begun to provide go-between services for inquiring candidates. These professional nakōdo are known as puro (pro) nakōdo.
The nakōdo is expected to play a variety of roles throughout the miai process. The first is the bridging role, hashikake (橋架け), in which the nakōdo introduces potential candidates and families to each other. The second role is as a liaison for the families to avoid direct confrontation and differences in opinions between them by serving as an intermediary for working out the details of the marriage.

saiken 細見 "guide book"
Also Yoshiwara saiken 吉原細見. Annually published guide to the new Yoshiwara quarters in Edo which was moved after the Meireki 明暦 fire of 1657.
This guide included detailed depictions of the red-light district, the names of brothels and the names, ranks and prices of the courtesans. The popularity of courtesans was ranked and recorded earlier, but in 1718 Tsutaya Juuzaburou 蔦屋重三郎 published the information as a folding pamphlet. Between 1728 and 1781 the pamphlets were published in a small horizontal book-format (yokobon 横本), and finally around the mid-to-late 19c. a vertical format (tatebon 竪本) came into vogue.
Between 1804-18, Yoshiwara saiken were used as the model for shibai saiken 芝居細見 which were compiled to give similar detailed information on theaters and actors.

A different view of Yoshiwara geishas;
The Throw Away Temple – Dumping Ground of the Yoshiwara Prostitutes.

Not far from Minowa station on the Hibiya line is a nondescript temple called 浄閑寺—Jokanji.
snip
During the Tokugawa era, in present-day Taito-ku, Senzoku 4-chome, there was a licensed prostitution area called Yoshiwara. The area had been moved from near Nihonbashi in the late 1650’s after a devastating fire leveled much of the city and the new area was known for a time as Shin-Yoshiwara. (新吉原, New Yoshiwara, though eventually the “New” was dropped and people simply referred to the area as Yoshiwara.) For 300 years, the area was home to thousands of women and girls, many of whom were sold by their families as young girls.

On on November 11, 1855 the Ansei Edo Earthquake (安政江戸地震, Ansei Edo Jishin) a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Edo

In 1855, the Northeast of the city was the hardest hit by fires, with the West of the city largely untouched. Yoshiwara in particular was among the worst hit.

Yoshiwara went into a decline and the brothel owners’ profits fell. To counter this decline, the owners brought in more women and lowered prices. Conditions worsened and disease became the norm.
