Transition from Linens to Cottons
here were many wholesale textile merchants who purchased and sold cottons in Õdenma-chô (present day Nihonbashi in Chûô-ku), which were called "momen-dana" (literary means "cotton merchant").
It must be noted that the development of cotton industry transformed the fashion of Edo. The period saw the transition of one type of clothes to another on the streets, as the linens worn by the people in the past could no longer be seen so often in public and it was replaced almost completely with cottons. Cotton is strong as well as nice and soft when touching it, and besides competent for moisture alsorption. Moreover, as it can be dyed easily, the fabric began to be adopted for casual-style kimono called "hitoe" (literally means "single-layered clothing") such as yukata, as well as for other products such as a padded dressing gown (i.e. wataire), socks (i.e. tabi) and bedding.
Furthermore, unlike expensive silk, cotton was not a costly fabric, and thus, it soon became popular among the people and grew into absolutely necessary products.
Picture of Dye House from "Picture Book: Amusements of Edo" (Ehon Azuma Asobi Kouya no Zu) Compiled by Asakusa-an and painted by Katsushika Hokusai 1802 (Kyōwa 2)

This, however, can be said that it occurred as a result of the encouraging policies about making cottons of the Tokugawa Shogunate as well as of the local feudal domains across the country. Especially, both Kansai region and Tôkai region were famous for their cotton products. These cottons were transported from these regions to the city of Edo, and many towns consisting of wholesale cotton merchants were developed here and there in the city of Edo. One famous example of this is Õdenma-chô.

A sayaate is a scabbards clashing confrontation between two warriors.
In the Kabuki world, this word is associated to the confrontation between Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon, who were both in love with the courtesan Katsuragi. The very first sayaate scene in Kabuki history was staged in the 3rd lunar month of 1680 at the Ichimuraza.
"Sayaate"
is now a 20-minute visually-striking dance look-alike popular act, which is based on the version written by Tsuruya Nanboku IV for his long drama "Ukiyozuka Hiyoku no Inazuma", which was premiered in the 3rd lunar month of 1823 at the Ichimuraza It is accompanied by a light Nagauta ensemble.
Structure
"Ukiyozuka Hiyoku no Inazuma" was divided in two parts, 9 acts and 19 scenes. The "Sayaate" scene of this drama was the 8th and last scene of the first part. It quickly became a successful independent drama. When "Ukiyozuka Hiyoku no Inazuma" is staged as a tôshi kyôgen, "Sayaate" is entitled "Date Kurabe Kuruwa no Sayaate".
Summary
Fuwa Banzaemon carries a sword named "Thunder" and wears a kimono decorated with a pattern of "lightning-in-the-clouds". His rival Nagoya Sanzaburô (Sanza for short) carries a sword named "Amorous Swallows" and wears a kimono decorated with a "swallows-in-the-rain" pattern. Unaware of each other, they make simultaneous entrances along the two raised passageways (hanamichi) through the audience. As they pass on the main stage, which represents Nakano Street in the Yoshiwara pleasure district at cherry blossom time, their sword hilts clash. They exchange insults, remove their green sedge travelling-hats, recognize one another and draw swords to fight over the courtesan Katsuragi. The mistress of a neighbouring tea house rushes forward and persuades them to call a truce.
Trivia
Depending on the production, the person who makes Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon lower their swords, is the mistress of a neighbouring tea house, the courtesan Katsuragi or a tea house bantô. The name of the mistress of a neighbouring tea house is related to the actor, who plays the role. It is for examples Otoki when Nakamura Tokizô plays the role or Okyô when she is played by Nakamura Shibajaku (because of his yagô Kyôya).

Kyoogen 狂言 Kyogen Theater - Legends

. Kyogen 狂言 Introduction .

- quote
What Really Happens in the Kyōgen Backstage
This material offers explanations mainly through picture on the tools and works, which were used for backstage devices of Kabuki. This helps us to learn about dramaturgy of Kabuki, including stage sets and theater properties.
With the growing popularity of ghost story-related plays since the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-1830), the large scale devices were developed by Hasegawa Kanpei, a professional set designer/producer, who handled all the stage sets at three officially recognized Kabuki theaters of Edo. This page is one of the scenes of "Imoseyama Onna Teikin" and describes the devise of "takiguruma (waterfalls wheels)" that expresses the Yoshino River. Usually, pale blue cloth is used to express the flow of a river. In this play, however, this devise was used to make it appear as if the water flew from the back of the stage to the audience seats.
In addition, this work includes the burning lantern entrance (chōchin nuke), the revolving door panel (toita gaeshi), the garden lantern entrance (tōrō nuke) of "Ghost Story at Yotsuya on the Tōkaidō", and the disclosure of a trick for a midair stunt feat of Ishikawa Goemon. The books for trick disclosure were a popular project to satisfy the curiosity of the audience, and many other books based on similar ideas were also published.

A ship carrying Kyogen actors from a tour to Yamaguchi became shipwrecked and the people, rescued on land, did not know where they are. There were no human houses on the island. But the monkeys on the island found the humans and many came to the beach to look at them. Since it was a ship carrying actors, the monkeys asked them for a performance of a 狂言 Kyogen. So one of them danced 三番叟 the Sanbaso. The monkeys liked that very much and threw some food at them. Then they climbed on a high tree and showed the actors the direction. When the actors started rowing that way, they finally reached 長門国 the Nagato province.

In Tsurigitsune, an old fox who has lost all of his relatives to a hunter's trap assumes human form to try to convince the hunter to stop killing. In this story, a hunter is visited by his uncle, the priest Hakuzōsu, who lectures his nephew on the evils of killing foxes. The hunter is nearly convinced, but after the priest departs, he hears the cry of the fox and realizes it wasn't his uncle at all but a fox in guise.
The fox resumes his natural form and reverts to his wild ways, takes the bait in a trap and is captured.

Sangenjaya 三軒茶屋 Sangen-jaya, "three tea stalls"
世田谷区 Setagaya ward / Sangenchaya 三軒茶屋

Under the un-auspicious name of "tea stall", a lot of extra entertainment was available in Edo.
Along the public roads to the countryside, there were many Chaya for travellers to rest.

. chaya, -jaya 茶屋 tea shop, tea stall - Introduction .

- - - - The three tea shops were
Ishibashi-ya 石橋屋 - originally 信楽 Shigaraki
Kado-ya 角屋
Tanaka-ya 田中屋

They were located at the beginning of two highways out of Edo,
大山街道 Oyama Kaido
and
二子街道 Futago Kaido.

Oyama Kaido was a favorite pilgrim road to
. 大山の不動様 Oyama no Fudo Son .
Shrine Oyama Afuri Jinja 大山阿夫利神社
There were two Oyama Kaido leading out of Edo, dividing at Sangen Jaya.

source : sangendyaya.co.jp

The rest of the area was still fields and forest in the early Edo period, but there were enough pilgrims to keep the tea stalls busy.
The Oyama Kaido is now called Tamagawa-doori 玉川通り Tamagawa-Dori.

The Futago Kaido was famous for
. Tamagawa Daishi 玉川大師 - temple Gyokushin Mitsuin .
4 Chome-13-3 Seta, Setagaya.
The postal station Futago Juku was at Kawasaki
神奈川県川崎市高津区二子 / Futago, Takatsu Ward, Kawasaki, Kanagawa

The tea stalls used to have two stories, with a second floor where the visitors could rest (and even stay over night if need be).
It is even told that Sakamoto Royma stayed at the 信楽 Shigaraki chaya.

.... Ishibashi-ya 石橋屋
The shop was originally called 信楽 Shigaraki, but the name was later changed to 石橋楼 Ishibashi-rō.
In the Meiji Period,
Kado-ya went out of business and Tanaka-ya was lost in a fire.
In 1936, Ishibashi-ya moved across the street and changed its name to 茶寮イシバシ Saryō Ishibashi which means something like “Tea Room Ishibashi.” The first floor was a 洋食喫茶 yōshoku kissa a café specializing in yōshoku, Japanized western dishes. The second floor was a banquet hall that served yōshoku for large events and parties. In 1945, the family running the shop was evacuated due to the destruction incurred by the American firebombing of Tōkyō.
... according to local legend Tanaka-ya re-emerged at some time in the Sangenjaya area. It didn’t come back as a teahouse but as a ceramics shop. The modern shop is called 田中屋陶苑 Tanakaya Tōen Tanaka Ceramics. The shop uses the family name and is the only surviving business with any connection to the Sangen-jaya place name.

A modern reminder of Sancha 三軒茶屋交差点の交番前

- quote
The area is often affectionately called 三茶 Sancha “three tea.”

..... In the Edo Period,
the area called Sangenjaya today was comprised of the former 中馬引沢村 Naka-Umahikizawa Village, 下馬引沢村 Shimo-Umahikizawa Village, and 太子堂村 Taishi-dō Village in former 武蔵国荏原郡 Ebara District, Musashi Province.
It seems that by the 1800’s, the popular name Sangen-jaya was already well known in the area. However, the name didn’t officially exist until quite recently. The birth of the official place name Sangen-jaya coincided with the 1932 creation of Setagaya Ward.
In the Meiji Period, the area became famous for シャボン屋 shabon-ya shops selling western soaps, 立飲屋 tachinomi-ya shops where you drink while standing, 駄菓子屋 dagashi-ya cheap candy and snack shops, and 魚屋 sakana-ya fish mongers. Today, it’s a rather affluent area with many bustling restaurants and bars.

ondo 音頭 popular song, music and dance

- quote -
The literal translation of "ondo" is "sound head." Kanji, or the Chinese characters used in the Japanese language, often have literal and abstract meanings, here the kanji for "sound" (音-on) having a more abstract meaning of "melody" or "music," and the kanji for "head," (頭) having a more abstract meaning of "beat," "base pattern." Hence "ondo" probably refers to a kind of "sound" or "beat pattern."
There are other names used to describe older Japanese genres of music. For example, "fushi" or "bushi" (節), with its literal meaning of "node," "knuckle," or "joint," refers to the nodes found in bamboo, usually found at a steady sequence. Thus "fushi" can also have the abstract idea of "sequence" to refer to notes and beats in a sequence, i.e., a melody.
An "ondo," however,
usually refers to a kind of song with a distinct swung 2/2 rhythm. This "swing" can be referred to as "ukare" in Japanese. "Ondo" is a term used in older Japanese genres, but it is still used today when referring to songs written in this swinging style. Sometimes the rhythm is NOT swung and it is played straight through. This is called "kizami".

Folk music and Obon
Part of the Japanese Obon celebration involves participating in the local community dance. The tradition of the Bon dance, or Bon odori (盆踊り), dates back a few hundred years, and it is usually accompanied by the local tune. In recent times, new music has been used for Bon dance accompaniment, including late enka hits and music written specifically for bon dancing. The "ondo" rhythm has always been common in Japanese folk music, but even the newer music written for Bon dances has been written in this style. ...
